How to write a press release!By Kevin Needham -------------------------------------------------------- One of the oldest methods of advertising is the press release. Often forgotten in online advertising, it can be a great way to bring exposure to your web site. The first question you must answer is: Why would I send out a press release? Here are a few reasons: 1) To announce a new web site! 2) To announce something new at your web site! ie: Special event. 3) To announce a contest or free give away! 4) To gain free publicity! Now there is a template-style for writing a good press release. If you follow this template you will be on your way. With all your publicity, you should remember to follow the A.I.D.A formula, http://www.inetexchange.com/aida-report.txt
The template press release should include: 1) The upper left corner: Here you'll only put one of two phrases. If the story you are sending to the media does not have any time value, you'll put the words "For Immediate Release" in the upper left corner. If it has a time value, you will put: "For Release..." and the date.
2) The upper right corner: Your contact information. "For Further Information Contact:". Name and telephone number
3) The headline: This is the biggest most important aspect of your release. It will account for your success or failure 90% of the time. So, spend 90% of your time making a headline that "draws" attention.
4) The Summary: Here you want to be as short and descriptive as possible. You want to tell the whole story in one paragraph. You must tie your headline statement in here, with your summary.
5) Credits and quotations: Here, you put quotes, followed by your credentials. ie: "The ease and speed of communication is erasing barriers that have long kept small business from reaching its potential," notes Nunley, a long time advertising professional.
6) The Call to action: The last part of the release is the call to action. You must tell the reader what you want them to do. ie: For more information, visit the Inet Mailer web site at "Your Press release online" http://www.inetexchange.com/press.htm Keep in mind here, you want to avoid the "hard sell" and simply provide a clear direction you want the reader to follow. So that is it, the press release template. It takes practice to get the ad copy you want, but it is well worth the effort. Here is a sample press release you can view to study its format and content. It was written by our press release specialist, Dr. Kevin Nunley, based on Kevin's 21 years in radio, TV, newspapers, and as an Internet columnist with articles on AOL, Prodigy, and in over 100 business publications, He KNOWS what editors want! http://www.inetexchange.com/press.htm Kevin Needham, Publisher, A.I.M.
