Feature Article: Take a Stand
Many people underestimate
the effect that they can have on their
economic and political environment.
After all, although we live in
democratic societies, the
opportunity to cast a vote is actually quite
rare. Moreover, the recent
political scandals only add to our sense of
hopelessness.
However, as a consumer you
exercise your economic vote every day,
showing your support or
disfavor through your purchasing decisions.
The fortunes of companies
rise and fall with the favor of the public.
If a company cannot deliver
what the customer wants, it will quickly
suffer loss, and ultimately
failure.
Realizing the power of the
new politics of consumption, many consumers
are taking more care with
their purchasing decisions. Price and
quality are no longer enough
to win the affections of a politically
discerning consumer. Increasingly,
people are starting to inquire
deeper into the practices
of businesses, adjusting their purchasing
decisions depending on the
ethics, environmental impact, or human
rights record of a corporation.
Small businesses have even
more political clout than the average
consumer. As a web based
business, it is very easy to champion the
causes you believe in, raising
awareness, and putting pressure on the
people or institutions that
make decisions. It is not uncommon to see
even the largest players
on the Internet running ads or buttons for
good causes. Why not put

Here are a few popular campaigns
to give you an idea what works.
Boycott Nike
In October 1996 CBS broadcast
a disturbing report about the atrocious
working conditions in factories
where Nike shoes are being made.
Revelations of sexual abuse,
corporal punishment, inhumane working
conditions and criminally
low pay proved deeply embarrassing for the
sports wear super giant.
Activists, on the net and on the ground,
showed their disgust through
various means of protest. Throughout it
all, Nike denied the charges,
claiming that it was all lies concocted
by fringe activist groups.
However, more recently a leaked internal
document confirmed that
Nike had not done enough to ensure safe
working conditions for the
people who work in the factories that
produce their products.
Finally, on May 20th 1998, Nike publicly
announced that it would
take strong action to force its subcontractors
to clean up their act. Yet,
as Nike seemingly capitulates, concerned
consumers continue to pressure

Internet." EFF works to inform its members
and the public about the
issues and debates that will shape the future
of electronic communications.
Its popular "blue ribbon" campaign has
made it one of the most

civil liberties are protected, while
balancing the complex issues
which arise with the free flow of

Doing Business with
Burma
According to Levi's, the
makers of those comfortable blue jeans you
are probably wearing right
now, doing business in Burma is out of the
question: "it is not possible
to do business in [Burma] without
directly supporting the
military government and its pervasive
violations of human rights."
The ruling military regime has attacked
and displaced millions of
civilians, enslaved thousands to work for
the army, and plundered
the nation's rainforests. I personally
witnessed the aftermath
of this destruction when I visited a refugee
camp on the border with
Thailand a few years ago. Thankfully, many
companies have pulled out
of Burma following a swell of grassroots
protest by concerned citizens.
However, though leaders of the
pro-democracy movement ask
that tourists stay away, many tour
operators continue to advertise
tourist packages to Burma. Money from
tourism, it is claimed,
helps to prop up the military regime and
undermines the country's
